Victim Safety Unit (VSU)

How does a victim register?

A victim can fill in the Victim Safety Unit Registration Form Adobe Acrobat Document or call us at 604 660-0316 or toll-free at 1-877-315-8822.

Who can register?

Victims of crime and civil (family) restraining order protected parties with safety concerns.

What information are registrants entitled to?

Information varies depending on the legislation that the victim falls under (e.g. Victims of Crime Act or Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act).  The Victim Safety Unit will review entitlement with the registrant.

Why should a victim register?

The Victim Safety Unit can provide notifications to victims of crime and persons protected by a civil restraining order who have safety concerns. These individuals may register for on-going notification about the status of an adult accused/offender being supervised by B.C. Corrections, both in the community and in custody (jail).

Victims or civil restraining order protected parties do not need to register in order to contact the Victim Safety Unit for specific information including B.C. Corrections status information, court updates, and copies of protection orders. The benefit to registration is that this is treated as an on-going request by the individual, meaning that the registrant will receive updates automatically from the Victim Safety Unit.

What about K-files (violence against women in relationship files)?

B.C. Corrections is mandated to provide notifications on K-files. K-file victims may also register with the Victim Safety Unit for added notifications.

What if the offender is in federal custody?

The Correctional Service of Canada and the National Parole Board provide notifications to registered victims of offenders under federal jurisdiction. Offenders are considered under federal jurisdiction if:

  • they are serving a custody sentence of two years or more, or
  • they are applying for parole.

*As of April 1, 2007, the B.C. Parole Board was eliminated and the National Parole Board is now responsible for all parole hearings on both provincial and federal offenders.

The Victim Safety Unit Registration Form Adobe Acrobat Document can be used for federal registration. Completed forms can be sent to the Victim Safety Unit (address and fax number is listed on the form). The Victim Safety Unit will forward these forms to the Correctional Service of Canada/National Parole Board. Please contact the Victim Safety Unit at (604) 660-0316 or toll-free at 1-877-315-8822 if you have any questions.
