Each type of security licence may have:

  • Specific re-certification: such as having to keep your ATC current, or renewing your certificate in the use of retraining devices.
  • Particular restrictions or conditions: such as a physical limitation or that you must be under supervision while providing a particular security service.

Training and Experience – B.C. and Out of Province

For information on approved security training programs in B.C., including transferring training credentials completed in other provinces, see the Training and Testing – Approved Programs.

Dogs and Handlers – Validation Certificate Requirement

If the use of dogs for security work is required by your employer, you must request authorization to use dogs from the Registrar, Security Services. You will have to provide the registrar with a copy of your current Validation Certificate for the use of dogs. If granted, the authority to use dogs will be printed on your security worker licence.

Refer to Security Programs Licensing Policy Manual Section 3.5 for full details on requirements and responsibilities. Refer to Training and Testing – Approved Programs for a link to the Justice Institute of British Columbia — the program that tests and provides the required Validation Certificate. (Note: the policy outlines when you must re-qualify in order to keep your validation certificate current.)

Note:  the Registrar will place a condition on the licence that indicates a specific authorization to use dogs for particular types of security work, i.e.  protection, narcotics detection and or explosive detection.  It is important to be aware of the expiry date of your validation certificate, as your Security Worker licence may have a different expiry date.  Regardless whether you applied for a longer term of security worker licence, if your validation expires before your security worker licence does, it is the responsibility of the security worker to re-validate and resubmit validation papers to the Registrar for the condition on back of licence to be valid.

Restraints – Advanced Security Training Course

If the use of restraints (handcuffs) is required by your employer, you must request authorization from the Registrar, Security Services, to use them. You will have to provide the registrar with a copy of your current certification that shows you have successfully completed the Advanced Security Training Course. If granted, the authority to use restraints will be printed on your security worker licence.

Refer to Security Programs Licensing Policy Manual Section 3.3 for full details on requirements and responsibilities. Refer to Training and Testing – Approved Programs for a link to the Justice Institute of British Columbia — the program provides the course required certificate of completion. (Note: the policy outlines when you must re-train/re-qualify to keep your certificate current.)

Note:  the Registrar will place a condition on the licence that indicates a specific authorization allowing licencees to use restraints.  It is important to be aware of the expiry date of your Advanced Security Training certificate, as your Security Worker licence may have a different expiry date.  Regardless whether you applied for a longer term of security worker licence, if your authorization expires before your security worker licence does, it is the responsibility of the security worker to re-qualify in the use of restraints and resubmit requalification certificate to the Registrar for the condition on back of licence to be valid.
