Legislation
The Security Services Act was passed in 2007 and brought into force, with the Security Services Regulation on September 1, 2008. The act – also referred to as the legislation – and regulation together form the hard rules of law for the Security Industry. These rules must be followed by all security industry licensees, without exception.

Policy
Policy fills in the details of the legislation, however unlike the legislation and regulation, policies are not passed by government, but developed and approved by the Registrar of Security Services. Policy provides guidelines that direct the actions of the Security Programs and Police Technology staff in applying the legislation and regulation.
