Security Business – Renew, Replace, Update and Expired Licences
Renewing a Licence – when and how to renew
The Registrar’s licensing department will send the business a reminder notice approximately two months before the business security licence is due to expire. The expiry date is also listed on the licence.
It is important that the business’s application to renew a licence is received by the Registrar BEFORE the licence expires. If the renewal application is received after the licence expires, the business will have to apply for a new licence. See the information on an Expired Licence lower down on this page.
There are two renewal forms: one is a long version that you use if there are changes to report and a shorter version is you are renewing and no changes to report.
See also the Forms and Guide page in this section of the website.

Lost or Stolen Licence
Under the Security Services Act, the security business and branch offices must post the current business security licence at all times while operating a security business. Should the licence be lost or stolen, a request for replacement must be submitted to the Registrar immediately. There is a nominal fee for this and the processing time is usually within a week. If you have an e-mail address, the licensing department can e-mail the business manager an electronic copy of the licence to print and post until the replacement arrives. Note, the expiry date does not change on a replacement licence. It will be identical to the licence misplaced or stolen.

Updating Information on your current licence or record held by the Registrar
Keeping the security business’s licence and records with the Registrar current is mandatory under the Security Services Act.
The Registrar must be notified within 14 days if:
- the business address or legal name changes;
- there is a change in business ownership;
- change in business management; or
- new controlling member(s) added to the business.
Other changes you must report to the Registrar are changes in contact information or addition of new branch offices.
If any update changes the actual licence itself, so a new one must be printed and mailed to you, there is a $20 fee required. Other changes made only to the records held by the Registrar incur no cost.

Expired Licence
Under the Security Services Act, the security business and branches must post a current licence whenever providing security services. Should the licence expire, security services may not be provided until a valid licence is issued.
An expired licence can not be renewed. The security business must apply for a new licence and pay the full fee — however, some of the required documentation will already be on file with the Registrar of Security Services. If you are not sure what is already on file, contact Security Programs.
If the security business licence is approved by the Registrar, it will be issued carrying the same licence number as the expired licence.
