About Us

Security Programs and Police Technology Division (SPPTD) is part of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Policing and Community Safety Branch. The division administers the Security Services Act and the Criminal Records Review Act.

Under the Security Services Act, SPPTD licenses and regulates the security industry including armoured car guards, security guards, security alarm services, private investigators and other security industry workers and security industry businesses. Review this website for information about Security Industry and Licensing.

Under the Criminal Records Review Act, SPPTD's Criminal Records Review Program Deputy Registrar reviews relevant criminal offences of individuals that fall within the scope of the Act to determine their risk to children.

SPPTD oversees public security systems and technology that actively supports policing in British Columbia. Policing is provided by the RCMP Provincial Force, 59 RCMP municipal forces, 12 independent municipal forces, and two First Nations forces. Technology is a key component of policing and the division is responsible for central oversight of all information technology and infrastructure. These activities also support the collecting, monitoring and reporting on provincial crime and police data.

In addition, SPPTD maintains the Protection Order Registry to support the enforcement of civil and criminal protection orders.
