On
behalf of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General,
Police Services is responsible for superintending policing
and law enforcement functions in British Columbia.
The primary
responsibilities of Police Services are to:
- ensure central
oversight of all policing;
- administer
policing policy;
- oversee the
funding and organization of provincial and municipal RCMP police
forces through contracts;
- collect,
monitor and report on provincial crime and police data;
- conduct research,
provide analysis and interpretation of provincial crime data;
and
- ensure adequate
and effective levels of policing enforcement
throughout British Columbia on behalf of the Ministry of Public
Safety and Solicitor General.

Enhanced Road Safety Enforcement Initiative – 2008 Annual Report
The Enhanced Road Safety Enforcement Initiative (ERSEI) establishes road-safety priorities and dedicates police officers to target dangerous driving behaviours using evidence-based strategies. This report has data on the 2008 operations of ERSEI programs and shows the broad benefits of targeted traffic enforcement, such as a 15 per cent fewer traffic-related fatalities in 2008 compared to 2007.
July 23, 2009 – Province Takes Immediate Action on Taser Report
Effective immediately, all police, sheriffs and corrections officers in B.C. have been directed to severely restrict the use of conducted energy weapons (CEWs), commonly known as Tasers, in accordance with recommendations from the Braidwood Commission, Solicitor General Kash Heed announced today.

June 1, 2009 – M-26's PULLED FROM USE AS A RESULT OF TASER TESTS
VICTORIA – The Solicitor General has directed the RCMP in B.C. to immediately pull all 578 of their older model M-26 Conducted Energy Weapons (CEW’s also known as Tasers) from service after independent testing showed the same models used by municipal police forces, sheriffs and corrections did not meet manufacturers specifications 80 per cent of the time.
