" Adding a Category to a Licence

Licensees may add a category to their licence at any time.

If a licensee wishes to add a category when renewing their security licence they should send a letter requesting that the additional category be added along with the renewal application. If individuals were previously only licensed in the Alarm Service, Locksmith and/or Security Consultant categories and are adding Security Patrol and/or Private Investigator categories to their licence please ensure the renewal fee submitted along with the application package is increased from $50 to $60.

If a licensee wishes to add a category prior to the expiry of their current security licence they simply need to send a letter requesting that the additional category be added. This letter should clearly indicate the licence number and full name displayed on the licensee's current licence.

Please note:

  • Where the licence category has prerequisites which must be satisfied then the licensee must submit proof of these prerequisites when requesting the category be added to their licence (reference letters, job descriptions, certificates, etc.).
  • Businesses who are adding a category need to send along with their letter requesting the additional category a bond rider which adds the requested category to the businesses bond.
  • Businesses must also ensure that they employ an individual who holds a security employee licence with the category they are requesting to be added.

Therefore, a letter from a business should identify a current employee who is also applying to add the category to their licence. Otherwise a business will need to attach to their letter, along with appropriate fees, an Application for Transfer of a Security Employee Licence Adobe Acrobat Document, a Multiple Employer Consent Form Adobe Acrobat Document or an Application for Security Employee Licence Adobe Acrobat Document to add a new employee who possesses the requested category.

There may also be a rare instance where an employee who holds several categories is authorized to work at multiple businesses. In such a case, that employee may already hold the category that a business is requesting to be added. The business simply needs to identify this employee in their letter requesting the additional category.
