Driver Medical Fitness

Can I re-licence if I did not complete a driver's medical or another requirement?

You may be able to re-licence once we have received what we have asked for.

How do I apply for an extension of time to complete a driver's medical or other requirement?

In special circumstances, you may have an extension granted. To apply for an extension, please call ICBC at 1-800-950-1498 or 978-8300 if you are calling from the Greater Victoria area.

Why have I been asked to complete a driver's medical examination form?

Look at the "reason for examination" on the top right of the form you received.

Class 5 to 8 drivers are required to have a Driver's Medical Exam at age 80 and every 2 years thereafter because this is an age where medical conditions affecting driving are more common. Even though you may be in good health, and believe it is unnecessary, the Driver's Medical Exam form must be completed and sent to us. The form is mailed out about 6 months before the 80th birthday, then every 2 years after that. For further information concerning this requirement, please carefully read the instructions on the back of the form you've received.

Class 1 to 4 drivers and those with an industrial licence endorsement are required to have a Driver's Medical Exam at time of application and on a routine schedule thereafter. The Driver's Medical Exam form is mailed to you when it is time for you to have your examination. If you don't need your commercial licence anymore, you can avoid this examination by attending an ICBC Driver Services Centre to downgrade your driver's licence to a class 5. For further information concerning this requirement, please carefully read the instructions on the back of the form.

A Driver's Medical Exam may also need to be completed for one of the following reasons:

  • It's time to monitor a previously identified medical condition that can affect fitness to drive
  • you declared a medical condition when you applied for or renewed a driver's licence, or
  • we received a report from a medical professional, police officer, or other person, and need more information to determine your fitness to drive.

Email OSMV.Mailbox@gov.bc.ca for other information on driver medical fitness.
