BAIT CARS ON GUARD TO PROTECT GAMES-GOERS' VEHICLES
Solicitor General Kash Heed stands next to the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team’s (IMPACT) “Podium of Shame” with the top three wanted car thieves in BC. The very next day the “silver medalist” was arrested by police. In keeping with this year’s auto enforcement month theme of ‘Securing the Best Winter Games Ever – Making Auto Crime a Priority’, police will flood Park & Ride lots with bait vehicles to help keep auto theft at a six-year low.

PROVINCE, BC LIONS TEAM UP FOR GANG-FREE YOUTH
BC Lions players and police are teaming up with at-risk youth to inspire them to lead gang-free lives, with $162,500 in support from Premier Gordon Campbell’s seven-point plan to combat gang and gun violence. Solicitor General Kash Heed joined representatives of the BC Lions and several Lower Mainland police forces to announce the Lions Pride program on Jan. 25.

DRIVERS REMINDED OF TEXTING, CELLPHONE DANGERS
Solicitor General Kash Heed joins Debby Bowers and Saanich Police Chief Constable Mike Chadwick to remind drivers of the dangers of texting or using hand-held electronic devices while they are behind the wheel. Fines and other penalties come into effect on Feb. 1. Bowers lost her son, Michael, who was texting just before he crashed one year ago.

LIVES SAVED BY STRONGER RULES FOR NEW DRIVERS
Solicitor General Kash Heed meets with Killarney Secondary school students at an event to dramatize the success of the enhanced Graduated Licensing Program in saving lives and preventing injuries. The changes to the program took effect in 2003, and in the following three-year period 31 young lives were saved and 17,500 crashes were prevented.

CRIME PREVENTION LEADERS CELEBRATED
Solicitor General Kash Heed presented Suman and Manjit Virk with the Anthony J. Hulme Award of Distinction, the highest honour in community safety and crime prevention, for their outstanding contribution and extraordinary dedication to making communities better places to live. The 11th Annual Solicitor General Crime Prevention and Community Safety Awards event was held earlier in the day to recognize thirteen others for their achievements in safety and crime prevention.

Joint Federal/Provincial/Municipal Funding for Vancouver Police Property and Forensic Storage Facility
Solicitor General Kash Heed was joined by representatives from the federal government, city of Vancouver and Vancouver police to announce joint funding of $30 million to upgrade the Vancouver Police Department Police Property Office and Forensic Storage Facility to further help in the crucial tasks of obtaining, storing and processing evidence. Each level of government contributed approximately $10 million.

New Law Cracks Down on Distracted Drivers

Bait Car Program Celebrates 7th Anniversary
Solicitor General Kash Heed joined Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu to celebrate the 7th anniversary of Vancouver's Bait Car program. Auto theft has decreased by 71 per cent in Vancouver when comparing the first six months of 2003 to 2009, resulting in 1,780 fewer vehicles stolen.

Downtown Community Court First Anniversary
Solicitor General Kash Heed joined supporters of the Downtown Community Court in Vancouver to mark its first anniversary on September 29. The court is a partnership between the Provincial Court of B.C. and justice, social and health services agencies working to address the complex crime issues in the area.

2009 CounterAttack Campaign
Solicitor General Kash Heed announces the launch of the CounterAttack campaign to get drunk drivers off the road. During July, police will be out in full force on roads, parks and on the water looking for people who are impaired by alcohol or drugs. At the event, the Solicitor General, police and ICBC appealed to young men aged 16 to 25 to make the right choice as that age group continues to account for 81% of all impaired drivers.
