320 MORE COP CAMS TO CATCH DRUNK, DANGEROUS DRIVERS
NEW WESTMINSTER – The Province will spend $1.8 million to more than triple the number of in-car police cameras across B.C. to back more impaired and dangerous driving charges with indisputable evidence, Solicitor General John van Dongen announced today. The new cameras will bring to approximately 450 the number of patrol-car cameras across B.C.

RED-LIGHT CAMERAS UPGRADED, EXPANDED TO SAVE LIVES
VANCOUVER – State-of-the-art, digital red-light cameras will be installed at 140 of B.C.’s most crash- and casualty-prone intersections to save lives and reduce serious injuries, Solicitor General John van Dongen announced March 6. The new units will expand the program, replacing 30 existing film cameras that circulate among 120 locations. The first digital cameras are expected to be operational later this summer.

GOVERNMENT REGULATES PAYDAY LENDERS
VICTORIA – Solicitor General John van Dongen announced new regulations for payday lenders which will help protect consumers who apply and receive short-term loans. Payday loan companies will need to be licensed by the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Authority (BPCPA) as of November 1, 2009.

AIR 2 LAUNCHED
RICHMOND – Air 2, the second police helicopter to take to the skies over Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, will double the ability of police to apprehend criminals, said Solicitor John van Dongen, announcing the new chopper at and event in Richmond. Since becoming operational in June, 2006, Air 1 has assisted with nearly 800 arrests for serious offences such as robbery, break-and-enters, gang-related offences, border runners, drug trafficking and even homicide.

GUNS AND GANGS TARGETED
PRINCE GEORGE / KELOWNA - Solicitor General John van Dongen announced crime fighting resources for Prince George and Kelowna on Saturday February 14. As part of a strategy to rid B.C. of gang violence that adds 168 new officers to focus on gangs and gun violence in the province, van Dongen announced that both Prince George and Kelowna would each get 16 officers dedicated to getting violent criminals off the streets.

RCMP GRADS COME TO B.C.
Solicitor General John van Dongen was at RCMP headquarters in Regina to meet the newest recruits that will be coming to B.C. The public safety minister attended a number of activities including the swearing-in for Troop #21, the Sergeant Major’s Parade, and the Drill Display and Badge Presentation. He also gave the address to the graduates and their families at the evening ceremony.

B.C. FIRST PROVINCE TO LICENCE HOME INSPECTORS
VANCOUVER – Solicitor General John van Dongen announces that B.C. is the first province in Canada to licence home inspectors to better protect buyers and ensure quality inspections. Licensing information and application forms will be posted on the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Authority (BPCPA) website on Feb. 27, after which the authority will begin accepting applications. The application forms will set out what is required for a license, such as insurance and affiliation with professional organizations. The regulations come into effect March 31, 2009.

AVALANCHE AWARENESS DAYS
NORTH VANCOUVER – Solicitor General John van Dongen launches Avalanche Awareness Days (Jan 9-11) at Grouse Mountain. The event demonstrated winter outdoor safety tools and techniques including presentations about the importance of trip preparation, proper training, sport specific safety gear and life safety tips.
