CRIME PREVENTION LEADERS CELEBRATED
Solicitor General Kash Heed presented Suman and Manjit Virk with the Anthony J. Hulme Award of Distinction, the highest honour in community safety and crime prevention, for their outstanding contribution and extraordinary dedication to making communities better places to live. The 11th Annual Solicitor General Crime Prevention and Community Safety Awards event was held earlier in the day to recognize thirteen others for their achievements in safety and crime prevention.

Joint Federal/Provincial/Municipal Funding for Vancouver Police Property and Forensic Storage Facility
Solicitor General Kash Heed was joined by representatives from the federal government, city of Vancouver and Vancouver police to announce joint funding of $30 million to upgrade the Vancouver Police Department Police Property Office and Forensic Storage Facility to further help in the crucial tasks of obtaining, storing and processing evidence. Each level of government contributed approximately $10 million.

New Law Cracks Down on Distracted Drivers
Solicitor General Kash Heed announces that starting January 1st, you may not talk, type, or dial on any hand-held cell phone or other portable electronic device while driving. Heed stressed the importance of drivers keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road.

Bait Car Program Celebrates 7th Anniversary
Solicitor General Kash Heed joined Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu to celebrate the 7th anniversary of Vancouver's Bait Car program. Auto theft has decreased by 71 per cent in Vancouver when comparing the first six months of 2003 to 2009, resulting in 1,780 fewer vehicles stolen.

Downtown Community Court First Anniversary
Solicitor General Kash Heed joined supporters of the Downtown Community Court in Vancouver to mark its first anniversary on September 29. The court is a partnership between the Provincial Court of B.C. and justice, social and health services agencies working to address the complex crime issues in the area.

Solicitor General Kash Heed announces changes to the Police Act to enhance police accountability and make is easier for the public to file complaints against the police. The legislation also paves the way for broad, independent oversight by B.C.'s police complaint commissioner.

2009 CounterAttack Campaign
Solicitor General Kash Heed announces the launch of the CounterAttack campaign to get drunk drivers off the road. During July, police will be out in full force on roads, parks and on the water looking for people who are impaired by alcohol or drugs. At the event, the Solicitor General, police and ICBC appealed to young men aged 16 to 25 to make the right choice as that age group continues to account for 81% of all impaired drivers.
