Buying a Business That Already Has a Liquor Licence

Liquor License

If you are buying a business that already has a liquor licence, you must still apply to transfer the licence to your name using the Transfer of Liquor Licence(s) application form.

The current owner will need to sign the "Agreement to Transfer Licence" form. This form is where they officially agree that once the general manager approves the transfer application they relinquish all claims to the licence(s).

You must complete the rest of the application form, personal history summary and consent to the criminal record search forms, any other documentation required, attach the application fee, and mail the entire package to branch headquarters in Victoria (the address is on the application form). If applicable, you must obtain from the current owner, all records of liquor bought from the Liquor Distribution Branch that is in stock at the time of the sale.

Transferring a liquor licence is subject to approval by the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch, and not automatic.

Note: make sure you know when your current licence is due to expire. You must renew the licence before that date or be asked to pay an additional late processing fee. Please see for more information. Please see Renewing My Licence for more information.
