Aug 17, 2010 - Changes to Race Days for the Current and Upcoming B.C. Horse Racing Seasons
UPDATE: (Aug 20, 2010)
A letter dated August 19, 2010 has been added (see links below). The letter includes information about important final changes regarding the 2011 standardbred race season.
On August 13, 2010, the BC Horse Racing Industry Management Committee issued a letter to
industry participants communicating changes to the 2010 and 2011 standardbred racing seasons
made by the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (GCGC). Those changes reflected the
financial difficulties faced by the industry and the need for a new approach to the business
of horse racing. The changes included a reduction of the number of race days in the 2010
season and the temporary withdrawal of all 2011 standardbred race days.
On August 16, 2010 the Committee issued a follow-up letter to clarify intentions for the 2011
standardbred race season. GCGC has not indicated there will be no replacement race days for the
ones that have been withdrawn. Rather, GCGC has advised the committee it needs to carefully consider
what the 2011 season will look like. This will involve discussions with representatives of the
standardbred sector. Decisions will be made concerning the 2011 standardbred race season in the near future.
The actions taken concerning the 2010 and 2011 standardbred race seasons were intended to give the industry
certainty about racing during the remainder of 2010 while the best approach for 2011 was considered.
