Preventing Crime in Your Community

The following resources are to assist B.C. communities achieve the goal of enhancing public safety and security through crime prevention activities. The resources are designed to assist communities in helping groups most at risk of becoming involved in crime.

Crime Prevention Week

B.C. Crime Prevention Week, coordinated by the Provincial Safe Communities Working Group and the B.C. Crime Prevention Association, is held each year from November 1 to 7. The week aims to raise awareness of crime prevention strategies and encourages citizens to get involved in community safety efforts. Safe Communities Day

Created by the partners of the Provincial Safe Communities Working Group, this campaign supports communities in hosting events during the summer when the weather can make it easier to encourage community members to come out, get to know their neighbours and learn more about crime prevention in their community. B.C. Crime Prevention Training Symposium

In September of each year the British Columbia Crime Prevention Association (BCCPA) hosts a training symposium with support from the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Insurance Corporation of BC (ICBC) and the National Crime Prevention Centre. Safe Communities Kit

A series of six publications developed to assist communities and individuals in preventing crime and enhancing safety across British Columbia: an overview, a needs assessment guide, planning guide, how to use the outcomes, working with the media and the "Be Safe" booklet. Most Canadians believe being able to live in a safe and secure environment is one of the most important aspects of their lives. This guide provides information on how to develop and implement an action plan, develop a communications strategy, plus it lists valuable sources of support.

Criminal Justice Reform

The Criminal Justice Reform Secretariat provides information on the B.C.'s criminal justice reform projects, such as the Downtown Community Court and the prolific offender management project, plus a community crime prevention guide a list of best practice resources and statistics. National Crime Prevention Centre (NCPC)

The Ministry works in partnership with the federal government's National Crime Prevention Centre. NCPC provides funding to strategically selected projects that contribute to preventing and reducing crime in Canada and to increasing knowledge about what works in crime prevention.
