Description
Nanaimo Correctional Centre is a sentenced facility for most of the adult male inmates on Vancouver Island who do
not require higher levels of supervision. The centre opened in 1983 as a minimum-security institution and upgraded
in 1997 to a medium correctional centre with the addition of a security perimeter fence.

Religious and spiritual programs
The chaplain provides weekly services, ecumenical and interfaith liaison, bible study classes and individual counselling.
Choirs and church groups from the community frequently assist with church services. The chaplain oversees an active
volunteer program. A native liaison worker is available to inmates, and facilitates talking circles and sweat lodge
programs.

Inmates have access to the following health care professionals:

Guthrie House:
Nanaimo Correctional Centre offers a substance free environment unit for up to 32 inmates. Urinanalysis tests are
mandatory and must indicate negative results prior to admittance. Inmates perform regular work duties and must commit
to staying substance free with ongoing counselling provided.
