Community Safety & Crime Prevention

Crime Prevention Week & Safe Communities Day

Crime Prevention Week

B.C. Crime Prevention Week, coordinated by the Provincial Safe Communities Working Group and the B.C. Crime Prevention Association, is held each year from November 1 to 7. The week aims to raise awareness of crime prevention strategies and encourages citizens to get involved in community safety efforts.

The theme of the week in 2008 is “Creating Safer Communities through Assessment, Awareness and Action”. The week provides a great opportunity for people across British Columbia to organize and participate in events that promote the importance of community assessment, awareness, and action towards addressing and preventing crime and violence in their communities.

Grants in the amount of $100 are available for communities throughout B.C. to promote community safety and crime prevention strategies during the week. For information on Crime Prevention Week view the BCCPA website or contact Victim Services and Crime Prevention Division.

Safe Communities Day

Created by the partners of the Provincial Safe Communities Working Group, this campaign supports communities in hosting events during the summer when the weather can make it easier to encourage community members to come out, get to know their neighbours and learn more about crime prevention in their community.

Grants in the amount of $100 are available June to August, for communities throughout B.C. to promote, support and celebrate local efforts to prevent crime and violence and keep their neighbourhood safe. Grant information and application form can be found on the Block Watch website – www.blockwatch.com
